The Nyamirwa Archives are dedicated to preserving and interpreting the histories, genealogies, leadership traditions and intellectual heritage associated with Nyamirwa and the wider Abakora community.

The Archives are founded upon the conviction that local history is indispensable to historical understanding. Communities such as Nyamirwa provide a unique vantage point from which to examine wider processes of migration, religious transformation, education, leadership and social change.

At the centre of this archive stands the memory of Mzee Zacharia Batinda, remembered as an elder, Prince of the Abakora and custodian of historical memory. Through leadership, wisdom and service, he came to embody continuity between generations. His life provides an important lens through which broader questions of leadership, identity and belonging may be explored.

Alongside him stands the legacy of Mzee Marcel Batinda, whose life illuminates many of the defining transformations of twentieth-century Kigezi. Living at the intersection of tradition and modernity, Marcel’s experiences reveal how individuals and families negotiated the opportunities and challenges created by Christianity, education, social mobility and economic change. His life story provides a valuable perspective on how broader historical processes are experienced within households and communities.

Through genealogies, family archives, photographs, oral testimony and historical documentation, the Nyamirwa Archives seek to preserve a record not only of individuals but of an entire social world.
